Hockey Advances to NEPSAC Semifinals with Shutout Win

In the quarterfinals of the NEPSAC Martin/Earl (Large School) Tournament, #5 Brunswick topped fourth-seed Williston Northampton on Wednesday, 2-0. With the shut-out win, the Bruins (16-12-4) advance to a semifinal showdown against the top-seed, Northfield Mount Hermon (24-6-3), on Saturday, March 3.

While the Bruins had the upper hand over the Wildcats (14-11-2) in the first period, the game remained scoreless until the second stanza.

Ryan Carmichael gave the visitors a 1-0 lead with 11:11 left to play in the second period with a long wrister from just inside the blue line. On the scoring play, Charles Shaffer set up Carmichael from behind the net, as the co-captain’s eighth goal of the season zipped through lots of traffic to light the lamp.

With the Bruins leading 1-0 in the third period, the Wildcats missed on a great scoring opportunity during a 12-second span that began with about 3:00 left in the game. Williston sent a flurry of shots on goal during the wild burst, as Brunswick goalie Dan Dachille turned away each one, even after losing his stick for most of the Wildcat shots.

In the final minute, Williston added an extra skater and put some pressure on Dachille with a pair of shots before Shaffer (14th goal) tapped in an easy empty-net goal with 6.7 seconds left to seal the win.
