Brunswick Wins Wild Consolation Game, Earns Post-Season Bid

Brunswick’s Christian LeSueur finished off a combined seven-goal third period against Albany Academy, netting the go-ahead goal with just five seconds left to play. The tally gave the Bruins an improbable 7-6 win over the Cadets (9-19-2, 6-18-2) in the consolation game of the Empire Cup at Hartong Rink on Saturday. With the win, the Bruins earned the #5 seed in the upcoming NEPSAC Martin/Earl (Large School) Tournament.

With the game deadlocked at 3-3 after two periods, Brunswick (15-12-4, 14-10-4) quickly made it a 5-3 game in the opening minute of the third period.

Tom Richter’s second goal of the game, and ninth on the year, gave Brunswick a 4-3 lead 37 second into the final frame. Jack Forrest (14th goal) followed with a tally 21 seconds later to give the hosts a 5-3 advantage.

Five minutes later, the Cadets cut the deficit to 5-4 with a doorstep goal against Brunswick goalie Alexander Rohlf in a 4-on-4 situation. Rohlf replaced starting netminder Dan Dachille in the second period.

With just over four minutes left in the game, the Bruins built another two-goal cushion on an even-strength goal by Cooper Moore, his second of the game and seventh of the season.

Albany’s Joseph Pasquini closed the gap, netting the next two goals of the game. Following a power-play goal by Pasquini with 3:18 left, the Cadets pulled their goalie for an extra skater. The move paid off, as Pasquini tied the game with 12.3 seconds remaining. Pasquini’s game-tying goal was his fourth tally of the game.

In a 6-6 game with just seconds left to play, some in Hartong Rink were contemplating Empire Cup overtime rules as the Bruins won the face-off. Brunswick quickly got the puck into the Cadets' end of the ice and with the clock running down, Forrest found LeSueur in front of the Albany net for the game-winner.

While the consolation game was the final regular-season contest for Brunswick, the Bruins will continue to play in the post season. Brunswick earned the fifth-seed in the Martin/Earl (Large School) Tournament and will travel to #4 Williston Northampton for a quarterfinal game on Wednesday, Februrary 28. Game time is set for 3:45 p.m.
