Basketball Advances to FAA Semis with O.T. Win

In the quarterfinal round of the FAA Tournament, fifth-seeded Brunswick needed an extra four minutes to upend fourth-seed King on Tuesday evening, 66-63. The overtime win sends the Bruins (6-16) on to the semifinal round to face top-seeded Hamden Hall (17-4) on Thursday, February 22.

In the extra session, Jack Molloy outscored the host Vikings 6-2 in the first two minutes of action, adding a three-pointer to open the frame. However, with a 64-60 lead, Molloy picked-up his final personal foul at 1:26 and left the game.

With a similar 64-60 lead at the 39.3 mark, Brunswick’s Harrison Caponiti fouled out on a made put-back by the Vikings. After King converted the traditional three-point play from the free throw line, the Bruins lead narrowed to 64-63.

On the Bruins’ next possession, Brunswick called a time-out just before turning the ball over near midcourt. Following the time-out with 22.8 seconds left, Muna Nwana penetrated the lane and finished with a lefty scoop-shot giving the Bruins a 66-63 lead with 10.5 seconds left to play.

King pushed the ball up-court, but its game-tying baseline three-pointer was contested and far off the mark, caroming out of bounds with 0.9 seconds on the clock. With a 66-63 advantage, Brunswick in-bounded the ball to Nwana on a long pass as time expired.

After a slow start by both teams to start the game, Brunswick eventually took a 44-30 lead over the Vikings in the second half. King clawed back into the game with a remarkable 25-11 run, eventually taking a 58-55 lead with 18.5 seconds left in regulation.

On the Bruins’ final possession in regulation, Ryan Mulshine sent the game into overtime, sinking a high-arching, 25-foot three-pointer. The crowd-quieting dagger, set-up by a Molloy kick-out pass, tied the game at 58-58 with 6.4 seconds left on the clock.

Molloy led all scorers with 25 points, hitting 10-21 from the floor, including 4-9 from behind the arc, while grabbing 10 rebounds. Harrison Caponiti matched Molloy with a double-double, dropping in 10 points and collecting a game-high 13 boards. Khari Wilson added 11 points for Brunswick, as Nwana chipped in eight. Ryan Mulshine took and made just one shot on the day, sinking the key three-pointer that sent the game into overtime.
