Brunswick will send two teams to the 2018 HEAD U.S. High School Team Squash Championships in Philadelphia later this week. The two squads of Bruins each qualified for a spot in the top division at the three-day tournament beginning on Friday, February 2, at the Philadelphia Cricket Club (PCC).
Currently, 108 teams will be competing across seven brackets at seven different locations around Philadelphia. However, the top 16 teams in the country, including both Brunswick entries, will be at the PCC battling for the Justi Cup and the chance to be crowned national champion.
Since the inception of the tourney in 2004, Brunswick coach Jim Stephens has led 10 different teams to the finals of the top division, winning the title in 2015 and 2016. Last year, the Bruins fell in the title match to Haverford, 5-2. The setback snapped a 41-match winning streak for the Brunswick 'A' team.
On Friday, the 8-0 Brunswick ‘A’ team, the overall top seed at the tournament, will face Shipley, from nearby Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania in the first round at 8:00 a.m. On the bottom half of the draw, the Brunswick ‘B’ team will open against third-seed Avon Old Farms, the 2014 National Champions at 10 a.m. The tournament will continue for two more days, with the championship round slated for Sunday, February 4.
During the regular season, the top squad for Brunswick beat three schools in the 16-team top draw, besting Hotchkiss (7-0), Avon Old Farms (4-3) and the tourney's second seed, Haverford (8-1).
