Swim Team Rallies Past Exeter

Brunswick bested Phillips Exeter 99-86 in the pool on Saturday, improving to 4-0 on the season. The Bruins were in a back-and-forth battle with Exeter, as Brunswick eventually took the lead for good with four events remaining.
 
In the opening race, the 200 medley relay, Brunswick’s quartet of Cole Pierce, Jack Sparks, Thacher Scannell, and Kyle Yelensky placed second with a time of 1:43.29, as Exeter took an early six point advantage. 
 
The Bruins took the lead after the 200 free, as Christian Farricker won the event with a Brunswick record time of 1:41.88. Keegan Drew placed second, and Nico Apostolides took fourth, giving the Bruins an overall two-point lead.
 
In the 200 IM, Pierce took top honors (2:00.72), Max Meissner placed third, and Jack Sparks took fourth. After three races, the Bruins’ lead increased to eight points. 
 
Marcus Hodgson won the 50 free with a time of 21.21, but Exeter took second, third and fifth, as the two teams split the 16 race points equally, 8-8.
 
Jake Charney dove for the Bruins in the next event, picking up a school-record 158.25 points, good enough for second place. Exeter picked up seven team points, slicing the Brunswick lead to one point.
 
Charney jumped off the board to join Scannell in the 100 fly.  Scannnell won the event with a time of 53.09, as Charney took third. Following the one-three finish, the Bruins added four team points to their advantage over Exeter. 
 
Exeter responded with a one-three-four finish in the 100 free, retaking the lead by one point.
 
Swimming in the 500 free, Farricker won with a time of 4:42.52, 20 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Apostolides.  Michael O’Malley finished fifth as Brunswick’s strong finish gave the visitors a five-point lead with four events left.
 
Hodgson, Drew, Scannell, and Farricker won the 200 free relay in a school-record time of 1:27.13. Alex Morgan, Thomas Foley, Yelensky and Apostolides placed third, boosting the Brunswick lead to 11 points.
 
Following an Exeter win in both the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke, the Brunswick lead was trimmed to seven points with one race remaining, the 400 freestyle relay.
 
To secure the team win, Brunswick needed to place second or better. In the race, the Bruins took first and third to secure the victory, 99-86. The team of Hodgson, Farricker, Pierce, and Drew won with a time of 3:19.46, while Apostolides, Yelensky, Meissner, and O’Malley finished in third.
 
The Bruins return to the pool to face Hackley at home on Wednesday, January 10.
