Basketball Rolls Hopkins for First Win

After a 20-day hiatus, Brunswick opened the 2018 segment of its season with a convincing 64-35 win over FAA foe Hopkins on Saturday in Dann Gym. The win gives the Bruins their first victory on the season (1-7) as well as in conference (1-2), while the Hilltoppers fall to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in FAA play.

The Bruins jumped ahead quickly in the first half, eventually taking a 33-10 lead at intermission. Holding a 23-point lead to start the second half, the Bruins freely substituted, as all 15 players got on the floor, including eight Bruins who played over 10 minutes in the contest.

In the second half, Brunswick slightly extended its lead, as the hosts outscored Hopkins 31-25 in the frame, en route to the 64-35 finish.

While both teams shot poorly from behind the arc, combining to hit just 2-27 from the three-point line, Brunswick (1-14 from downtown) held a commanding 29-15 edge in rebounds. The Bruins were strong on both ends of the floor, collecting 19 offensive caroms, leading to numerous second chance shot opportunities. Brunswick’s Jack Molloy had a huge day cleaning the glass, as his game-high 15 rebounds matched the team total for Hopkins. Additionally, Molloy gobbled up a game-best six offensive rebounds to go with his nine points in 17 minutes of play.

In an evenly-whistled game (team fouls: Brunswick 21, Hopkins 20), the Bruins connected on 18-32 shots from the charity stripe, while the Hilltoppers knocked down 12-25 free throws. Brunswick’s Tristan Joseph benefitted most from free trips to the line, knocking down 6-8, on the way scoring 10 points in the game. Graham Pierce was a perfect 5-5 from the line, finishing with a game-high 14 points in 19 minutes.

Harrison Caponiti had another solid effort with seven rebounds and six points in just 16 minutes of action.

The Bruins return to action on Wednesday, January 10, at Storm King.
