Hockey Picks Up Road Win

Brunswick topped New Hampton by a 4-3 score at the Phillips Exeter Invitational in New Hampshire on Saturday in a scheduled 60-minute contest. The Bruins returns to the Exeter ice on Sunday afternoon, taking on last year’s NEPSIHA champions, Kimball Union, at 2:00 p.m.

 

Charles Shaffer netted the first two goals of the game, giving the Bruins a quick 2-0 lead within the first seven minutes of action. Shaffer’s second goal at 6:15 came off a nice cross-crease feed from Jack Forrest, as Shaffer went high above the blocker of the New Hampton goalie.

Trailing 2-1 in the second period, the Huskies countered with a pair of goals, tying the game at 2-2 with a bit more than 10 minutes left in the frame. The opening tally happened on a 3-on-2 rush, while the game-tying goal occurred on a 5-on-3 power play.

The Bruins answered the New Hampton rally with a strong shift by Ed Glassmeyer, Aaron Aboodi, and Buzzy Gregoire. Brunswick teammate Henry Hill collected an Aboodi feed from behind the New Hampton net and buried a quick snapshot to put the Bruins back in front, 3-2, with 7:51 left in the second period.

 

With just over four minutes gone in the third frame, Forrest pushed the Brunswick advantage to 4-2. Forrest finished off a backhand pass by Shaffer from behind the New Hampton goal.

The Huskies made it a one-goal contest with 5:15 left in regulation, and pulled their goalie for an extra skater with just over a minute to play. The Brunswick defense held off New Hampton’s final assault, as Bruins goalie Dan Dachille (32 saves) made a pair of key stops in the waning seconds to preserve the 4-3 win.

For the game, the Huskies outshot Brunswick, 35-32.
