Hockey Falls in Opener

Brunswick dropped a 3-1 decision at Loomis Chaffee on Wednesday. In the season-opening game for both squads, the two teams were locked in a 1-1 battle into the third period before the hosts netted a pair of goals, the last an empty-net tally to seal the victory.

Despite a scoreless first period, both squads were sharp moving the puck up and down the ice, as each team finished the frame with 11 shots on net.

In the second period, Brunswick’s Charles Shaffer netted the first goal of the 2017-18 season, stuffing home a power-play goal on the Loomis doorstep with 6:39 left in the frame.

Loomis countered in the final minute of the second period, netting the equalizer with 56 seconds remaining.

The hosts took a 2-1 lead midway through the final period following a nice feed from behind goal to the slot for the go-ahead tally.

In the final minute of play, Brunswick pulled goalie Dan Dachille (32 saves) for an extra skater.

The Bruins (0-1) kept the pressure on the Pelicans’ net, but could not score a game-tying goal. Following a time out by Brunswick, Loomis (1-0) won the face off deep in their own end. The Pelicans pushed the puck up ice and scored an empty-netter to wrap up the contest.

For the game, Loomis held a slight 34-31 edge in shots.

On Saturday, December 2, the Bruins will take part in the two-day Exeter Invitational. Brunswick will face New Hampton at 3:30 p.m.
