Wrestling Team: Season Preview
Longtime wrestling coach Tim Ostrye, heading into his 32nd season leading the Bruins, has a strong blend of veterans looking to continue the remarkable success of the wrestling program.
A year ago, the Bruins finished the regular season with a 16-1 record, winning the FAA league title for the 20th straight time. Additionally, the Bruins won their own tournament for the seventh time in a row, along with taking the WNEISWA crown for the fourth-straight time.
Ostrye will once again have a great group of veteran coaches working with him. Bob Benjamin, in his 21st year with the program, will join 12-year assistants John Martin and Neil Minsky inside the wrestling room that bears Ostrye’s name.
Leading the charge on the mat for Brunswick are captains John Delucia, Jack Ocken, and Lachlan Rosato. The seniors are experienced grapplers that Ostrye believes will pass along the ethos of hard work and commitment to the younger wrestlers.
Last season, the three captains finished with a combined record of 76-21, with 44 pins. Delucia led the team with 33 wins (33-5) at 152 pounds. Rosato, a two-time captain, finished last season with a 29-6 mark, winning the 220-pound weight class at the WNEISWA Championships. Wrestling against 195-pounders last season, Ocken went 14-10, picking up 11 pins despite being significantly lighter than nearly all of his opponents. This season, Ocken will be at 195 for his matches.
Other key returners include Rishi Das (20-8), Nadji Ngbokoli (8-0), Harry Fett (28-10, 26 pins), and Tim Saunders (30-7).
The Bruins get on the mat against their first competition at the Hopkins Invitational on Saturday, December 2.
