Basketball Team: Season Preview

Brunswick basketball will have a new leader for the 2017-18 season, as Steve Juricek takes over the program. The first-year coach, with local ties as an AAU basketball director and coach, is looking forward to the new challenge.

“I’ve been blown away by the pride and culture at Brunswick,” Juricek said. “The support I’ve received from the other coaches, teachers, and trainers has been very warm and welcoming.”

Along with assistant coaches Shawn Harris and Zach Dobbs ’06, Juricek has seven returning players from last season’s 8-14 squad that finished fifth in the FAA regular season with a 6-8 conference mark.

A pair of experienced seniors, co-captains Muna Nwana and Graham Pierce, will lead the charge for the Bruins on the court. Nwana, a battle-tested point guard, and Pierce, a versatile scorer, will help carry the team’s offense, as both have been key varsity players for the past two seasons.

Reflecting on his new team, Juricek seems pleased with the preseason preparation.

“The players have responded well to my style of coaching as well as my approach to the game,” Juricek noted. “They have picked up new basketball concepts very quickly. It is making this experience unforgettable.”

Blending a challenging home-and-home FAA schedule totaling 14 games with a number of strong, non-conference opponents, Juricek believes his new team is ready for action.

Brunswick opens the season with a non-league contest against Taft on Wednesday, November 29.
