Squash Team: Season Preview

Following the program’s 10th national finals appearance last season, squash coach Jim Stephens believes a potential return to the finals is based on simple concepts taught inside the squash facility that bears his name: character, trust, and a commitment to working hard at the craft.

Last season the Bruins (12-1) lost in the national finals to Haverford, 5-2. The championship setback halted a remarkable 41-match winning streak that encompassed two national title runs (2015, 2016), including a win over Haverford in the 2015 championship match.

Heading into his 33rd season at Brunswick, Stephens owns a record of 400-68 (.855). The 2014 National Coach of the Year has taken 10 different teams to the national finals, won the New England (NEISA) Championship 15 times, and collected 14 Brandes Trophies for the best dual-match record in New England.

For the 2017-18 campaign, Stephens will look to a trio of experienced senior captains to pass on his tenets of squash to the other members of the team.

Max Finkelstein is slotted to play at #1 for Stephens, Will Holey takes #2, and Patrick Feeley holds the #3 spot on the Bruins’ ladder. All three have a significant amount of high-level experience, including winning matches in the championship round of Brunswick’s last national title in 2016.

Stephens, along with third-year assistant Ryan Abraham, has experienced players across the roster.

Looking at the schedule, Stephens points to the season-opening match against Haverford at home on Saturday, December 2. Both teams will have plenty of talent on display inside the Stephens Squash Center. If the Bruins put in quality work during practice heading up to that contest, Stephens is hopeful of a positive outcome for his squad.

A week following that highly anticipated match, Brunswick will play another national power in Avon Old Farms, the 2014 national champions.

If the Stephens philosophy holds true, the Bruins could be in Philadelphia in February battling for another national title.
