Football Ends Season with Road Win

Brunswick finished the 2017 season with a 22-8 road win over Williston Northampton in an Erickson League contest on Saturday night. The win gives the Bruins a 5-3 overall mark and a 5-2 record in conference action.

The Bruins scored a pair of first quarter touchdowns on passes from Nick Henkel (14/29 251 yards, 3 TD) to Harrison Caponiti and Cornelius Johnson. Adding two extra-point kicks by Chris Chavez, Brunswick built a 14-0 lead by the end of the opening stanza.

The Brunswick defense was tested early in the opening quarter, turning back a first-and-goal situation by the Wildcats, as Kevonne Wilder defended a fourth down pass to halt the scoring threat.

For the game, the Brunswick defense collected 14 tackles for loss, made four fourth-down stops, and forced three turnovers, while allowing just 171 total yards.

Williston’s only points in the game were scored on a defensive touchdown, returning an interception 51 yards to pay dirt in the second quarter. The Wildcats added a two-point conversion to close the gap to 14-8.

The Brunswick defense came up with another turnover in the red zone in the final minute of the half, as Chris Burdick intercepted a Williston pass on the Bruins’ five-yard line.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Brunswick added an insurance touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 74-yard scoring pass from Henkel to Caponiti. On the TD toss, Caponiti grabbed a short pass near the Brunswick sideline and sprinted past three Wildcats defenders for the score. The Bruins added a successful two-point try on a Henkel scramble, giving the visitors a 22-8 lead with just under eight minutes to play in the game.
