Football Shuts Out Kent
Brunswick scored 14 points in each of the first three quarters en route to a commanding 42-0 Erickson League win over Kent at Cosby Field on Saturday. The Bruins (2-1, 2-0) were strong in all three phases of the game, combining a balanced offense, stout defense and excellent special teams to earn their first shut-out win since 2015.
After the Bruins defense forced a Kent punt to open the game, the Brunswick offense went to work. The Bruins marched 81 yards in nine plays, capped by a Nick Henkel (10/16, 140 yards, 4 TD’s) scoring strike to Jack Montinaro (4 rec., 75 yards, 2 TD’s) from 28 yards out. Placekicker Chris Chavez added the first of six made extra-points for a 7-0 lead.
Brunswick kicker Dante Polvara, who had all seven kickoffs downed in the end zone, consistently kept the Lions’ offense in poor starting position following each Brunswick score.
Later in the first quarter, a three-and-out by Kent (0-4, 0-3) gave the Bruins’ offense excellent starting position at their own 43. Two plays after a 40-yard rush by Michael Gottlieb (4 carries, 64 yards), Henkel capped the drive with a seven-yard scoring toss to Cornelius Johnson (4 rec., 32 yards, 2 TD’s).
Leading 14-0, Brunswick added two more scores in the second quarter. Montinaro caught a 12-yard TD toss from Henkel, while Henkel called his own number on a three-yard touchdown scamper as the Bruins took a 28-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Bruins put the game out of reach on the first play from scrimmage to start the second half when Jack Ocken (8 rushes, 91 yards, 1 TD) took a handoff at the Bruins 45-yard line and blazed a 55-yard touchdown trail through the Kent defense. The score boosted the Brunswick advantage to 35-0.
A final, five-yard touchdown toss from Henkel to Johnson in the third quarter finished the scoring for the Bruins.
