Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision to Taft

On Saturday, Brunswick fell to Taft on the road, 2-0. The Rhinos, last season’s WNEPSSA Champions, scored a goal in each half, as the Bruins (0-1-1) were outshot 10-3 on the day.

Taft opened the scoring in the 15th minute of the game following a corner kick. Following the corner kick, Brunswick could not clear the ball, as the Taft striker buried the first and only goal of the opening stanza.

On the day, Brunswick’s defense, keyed by Jack Withstandley, Jeffrey Ramirez, Jamie Polak, and Ben Powers, worked hard for all 90 minutes in front of goalie Harry Barringer (nine saves). In the 55th minute, Barringer made a stellar stop on a penalty kick to keep it a one-goal contest.

In the 70th minute, Barringer nearly tied the game on a free kick. From the midfield area, Barringer’s shot tracked directly on line for the Rhinos’ net, but the Taft keeper got just enough of a touch to deflect it away.

Ten minutes later, Taft made it a 2-0 game, as a Rhino midfielder blasted an impressive scoring shot from 25 yards out into the upper-90 side netting.

In the 83rd minute, the Bruins had a solid chance to slice the Taft lead. Brunswick’s Nick Boardman launched a free kick from 25 yards away that smacked the crossbar. However, despite the ball staying deep in the Taft end, the Bruins could not convert the rebound.

Up next for the Bruins is a home contest against Loomis Chaffee on Wednesday, September 20, at 4:30 p.m.
