Five Bruins Earn Lacrosse Post-Season Accolades

Following an undefeated run through the New England West 1 (NEW1) conference, five Brunswick lacrosse players were recognized as all-league performers by the coaches in the conference. The quintet of Alex Buckanavage, John Fox, Sean Morris, Jimmy Heidt, and Patrick Burkinshaw led the Bruins to a 15-1 overall record and an 11-0 mark in conference play.

 

Brunswick, ranked fourth in the latest Inside Lacrosse-Under Armour national poll, wrapped up the 2017 campaign with a 15-game winning streak. The lone loss was an 11-6 setback to second-ranked Landon in Brunswick’s season-opener back on March 24.

 

The Bruins now own two NEW1 championships since joining the league in 2006, as Brunswick won the conference crown back in 2014.

 

Buckanavage, also an Under-Armour All-American, finished the 2017 campaign with a team-high 59 points (29 goals, 30 assists). Additionally, Buckanavage picked up the Stewart Lindsay Award as the league’s best attackman for 2017. The senior tri-captain from Ridgefield, Conn., will continue his lacrosse career at the University of Michigan of the Big 10 Conference.

 

Morris, another tri-captain, finished his senior campaign with 21 goals and three assists. The Stamford, Conn., resident will head to the University of North Carolina of the ACC to play lacrosse.

 

The third captain for the Bruins, John Fox, wrapped up his final season at Brunswick with eight goals and three assists. The defensive-minded midfielder from New Canaan, Conn., will play lacrosse at the University of Virginia, also of the ACC.

 

Heidt led the Bruins with 42 goals this season. The senior from Greenwich, Conn., added 11 assists for a total of 53 points. Heidt will play for Dartmouth College of the Ivy League next year.

 

Burkinshaw, the lone junior of the group, had an impressive debut season in net for the Bruins. The University of Virginia commit from Madison, Conn., made 130 saves and helped the Bruins hold 14 of 16 opponents under 10 goals.
