Crew Wraps Up Spring Season at NEIRA Championships

Brunswick wrapped up the 2017 spring rowing season in Massachusetts on Saturday, with three entries competing in the 71st NEIRA Championships at Lake Quinsigamond. The 1V boat finished eighth overall, adding a second-place finish in the Petite Final, while the 2V and 3V boats each took fifth in Grand Final races.

The members of the 1V, including seniors Alec Esmond (coxswain), Alex Wada (stroke), Will Marvin and Tate Huffman (bow), along with juniors Matthew Jacobson, Jack Mozingo, Scott Gibbons, Austin Sammons, and David Sorbaro, had a strong third-place run in the qualifying heat. However, only the top two teams in each of the three heats advanced to the 1V Grand Final.

In the 1V Petite Final, the Bruins had an early lead on the field. By the midpoint of the race, Andover closed the gap on Brunswick and eventually overtook the Bruins. Brunswick countered with a fierce sprint at the finish, but was edged by Andover for the top spot.

The 2V qualified first in their opening heat and earned a fifth-place spot in the Grand Final race. The fifth-place finish marked the end of a strong season for the boat and the careers of thee recent graduates: coxswain Conor Boyle, Alex Tucker, and Michael Farello.

In the 3V event, Brunswick nabbed the final qualifying spot in its heat. The Bruins raced to a fifth-place finish in the Grand Final, avenging a loss to Simsbury at the Kent Invitational.
