Baseball Falls in FAA Title Game

Brunswick, making its third-straight FAA Championship appearance, dropped a 4-2 decision to top-seeded RCDS in Rye on Friday. The second-seeded Bruins, the two-time defending FAA champions, finish the 2017 season with a 14-6 record.

Following an extended weather delay, the Bruins had a chance to jump out in front in the top of the first inning. However, after getting the first two runners of the game on base, the Bruins came up empty, stranding the pair of runners on second and third.

The Wildcats found a way to plate two runners in the bottom of the first, scoring a pair of runs on a bases-loaded, two-out single.

In the third inning, RCDS extended its lead to four on another bases-loaded, two-out single.

The Bruins countered by scoring a run in the top of the fifth. With one out, Jake Hyde singled home Ethan Hynes, who had led off the frame with a double.

Trailing 4-1 in the sixth, the Bruins got a two-out rally going, as a Patrick Ryan single pushed teammate Ryan Hanrahan to second base. Hynes stepped to the dish and smacked his second double of the game, scoring Hanrahan from second and making it a 4-2 game.

In the seventh, the Bruins got a runner on base, bringing the tying run to the plate with one out. Unfortunately for the Bruins, a successful pick-off play took away the scoring threat, and the Wildcats would hold on for the 4-2 victory and the FAA Championship.

Hynes had the lone multi-hit day for the Bruins with a pair of doubles, while adding an RBI and scoring a run. Five other Bruins added singles.

Brunswick starter Mike Beninati (2-2) took the loss, as the senior righty allowed four runs, three earned, over 3.1 innings, while striking out two batters. Reliever J.D. Sparks threw 2.2 scoreless innings and picked up a trio of punch-outs.
