Lacrosse Clinches Share of League Title

On a rainy afternoon, Brunswick topped Trinity-Pawling, 13-10, to clinch a share of the 13-member New England 1 West league title. The Senior Day win on Cosby Field was the 14th-straight victory for the Bruins, ranked 12th nationally by the Inside Lacrosse-Under Armour poll.

Brunswick (14-1, 10-0) will try to win the conference crown outright on Saturday, May 20, as the Bruins travel to Berkshire (7-8) in the season finale for both schools. League rival Salisbury has a chance to share the title, but the Knights need to combine wins over Deerfield, Avon Old Farms, and Choate with a Berkshire victory over Brunswick to be 2017 co-champs.

Jimmy Heidt had a big first quarter for the Bruins, scoring four of Brunswick’s five goals in the frame, as the Bruins built a 5-3 lead. Alex Buckanavage passed out three assists in the quarter.

In the second quarter, the Bruins outscored the Pride 4-1 to build a 9-4 lead heading into intermission. Buckanavage added a pair of goals and an assist during the run, while Heidt chipped in with an assist.

After allowing a man-up goal to start the third quarter, Brunswick netted three-straight goals to build a 12-5 lead before the Pride netted a goal with 10 seconds left in the quarter. Buckanavage dished out two more helpers, as the co-captain finished with a game-high seven assists and nine points overall.

Following a goal by Sean Morris at 9:43 of the fourth quarter, the Bruins led Trinity-Pawling 13-6. The Pride countered, netting a goal one minute later. Roughly five minutes after the solo marker, the visitors poured in three goals in less than 30 seconds of action. The Pride netted a goal at 3:33 and tallied two man-up goals in 27 seconds to cut the deficit to 13-10 with 3:06 to play.

The Bruins weathered the Trinity-Pawling surge, holding the visitors scoreless in the final minutes to preserve the conference-clinching victory.
