Baseball Bests King in FAA Game

Brunswick’s Aaron Sabato launched a pair of solo home runs, while pitcher Trystan Sarcone fanned 12 batters, leading the Bruins to a 5-3 FAA win over King on Monday in Stamford. The Bruins, with three games left in the regular season, improve to 13-3 overall and 8-2 in FAA action.

The three games, including two key FAA contests, are all home game scheduled for this week. The Bruins host FAA foes Hopkins on Tuesday and Greens Farms on Friday, while regional power Cheshire Academy visits on Thursday.

With an 8-2 FAA mark, the Bruins have a half-game lead over RCDS (7-2) for first place, with a total of 12 FAA games on the regular-season conference slate. The top FAA team earns a bye to the semifinals of the league tournament next week.

In the top of the first inning, Brunswick scored a pair of runs to take a quick 2-0 lead over the Vikings. Following a leadoff plunking by King’s pitcher on Charlie Sealy, Sealy advance to second on a balk before Sarcone drove in the leadoff runner with a single to left.

With no outs, Sarcone was caught stealing during Sabato’s first at-bat. Two pitches later, Sabato launched his eighth homer of the season, and his fourth first-inning homer in the past five games to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. Ryan Hanrahan followed with a one-out triple, but was stranded on the corner, as the Vikings got the next two outs to end the rally.

King got one run back in the bottom of the inning, as the Vikings drove in the leadoff runner, who doubled to start the frame, on an infield error.

In a 2-1 game in the top of the third, Sabato led off with a first-pitch homer, his ninth of the season, to give Brunswick a 3-1 lead.

King countered with a run in the bottom of the third, again plating the leadoff hitter. Following a single and a stolen base to start the inning, the Vikings’ leadoff batter scored from second on a single to the outfield and cut the deficit to 3-2.

An inning-opening walk to Brunswick’s Ethan Hynes turned into another run for the Bruins in the fourth inning. Hynes reached second base on an infield groundout and later scored on an infield error, as Brunswick bolstered its lead to 4-2.

King scratched its final run across in the bottom of the sixth of Brunswick starter Sarcone. Following a one-out double, King scored the runner on a two-out single, once again making it a one-run ball game.

Leading 4-3 in the top of the seventh, Brunswick added an insurance run on a bases-loaded single that scored Sarcone, who doubled earlier in the inning.

With his team holding a 5-3 lead, Sarcone got in a bit of trouble, allowing runners to reach first and third with one out. However, an unconventional 6-4-3-2 double-play ended the game, as the final out was made at home plate.

Sarcone (5-0) went the distance for the win, tossing 7.0 inning and picking up a remarkable 12 strikeouts against no walks. He boosted his season total of K’s to 49. Sarcone allowed three runs, two earned, as the lefty's ERA moves to a miniscule 0.538.

Sarcone also led the Bruins at the plate with three hits, including a double and one RBI. Sabato accounted for two solo homers and two RBI, while Hanrahan added a triple and a single. Sealy had two hits and one RBI.
