Baseball Falls in Extra Innings

Despite a pair of two-run homers by Brunswick’s Aaron Sabato, Hamden Hall escaped with a 9-7 win in eight innings in FAA action on Tuesday. Brunswick (11-3, 7-2) hosts Salisbury in a non-league game on Thursday before facing FAA foe King on Friday, May 5.

In the bottom of the first inning, with a runner on base, Sabato smashed the first pitch he saw from the Hornets’ lefty hurler over the right field fence to give Brunswick a 2-0 lead. Sabato’s blast was his sixth of the season and his third-straight first-inning round-tripper.

In the bottom of the third inning, following a single by Trystan Sarcone, Sabato stepped to the plate and smashed another first-pitch homer off the Hamden Hall starter. The left-center bomb was the seventh of the season for Sabato and 12th in his career at Brunswick.

Holding a 4-0 lead, the Bruins gave a pair of runs back in the top of the fourth inning, as a pair of fielding errors led to two Hamden Hall runs.

The Bruins got the two runs back in the bottom of the frame, as singles by Jake Hyde and Charlie Sealy led to two runs. Both scored on a fielding error on a hard-hit ball by Ethan Hynes.

The Hornets opened the fifth inning with three-straight doubles and cut the Brunswick lead to 6-4.

Later in the inning, Hamden Hall tied the game at six on a two-run single with two outs.

The Bruins countered in the top of the sixth, as Sabato worked his way around the bases after earning a lead-off walk. Patrick Ryan plated Sabato with a sacrifice-fly to left, giving the hosts a 7-6 lead.

Brunswick reliever Nick Mosher stepped in for Sealy, the Bruins’ starter, to begin the sixth inning. The Hornets managed to scratch the tying run across the plate on a wild pitch.

With the contest knotted at seven in the top of the seventh, a nifty put-out on a throw from right fielder J.D. Sparks to catcher Ethan Hynes stymied a Hamden Hall scoring threat and ended the inning. Hynes shrugged off the collision at the dish following the put-out, walking back to the dugout with a bloody nose.

The Bruins had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh, but Ryan was stranded at third base after reaching on a one-out single earlier in the inning.

In the first frame of extra-innings, the Hornets loaded the bases with one out on a trio of walks. Mike Beninati replaced Mosher on the mound and struck out the first batter he faced in the bases-loaded jam. With two away, Hamden Hall scored two runs on a single to left field and took a 9-7 lead.

Hynes opened the bottom of the eighth with a leadoff single for Brunswick, bringing the tying run to the plate. However, the next three Bruins were retired to end the game.

In the game, the two teams combined for 22 hits and nine errors, including five miscues by Brunswick.

Sabato’s two homers and four RBI, along with Hyde’s two singles, led Brunswick, as Hynes added a pair of RBI and a single. Sabato's four RBI gives the slugger a team-best 16 on the season.

Sealy tossed 5.0 innings for the Bruins, giving up six runs, but just two earned, while striking out one batter. Mosher (1-1) went 2.1 innings in relief, allowing three runs (one earned), while picking up three K’s. Beninati tossed the final 0.2 innings and picked up one strikeout.
