Tennis Tops Hopkins, Remains Undefeated in FAA

Brunswick cleared a major hurdle in defending its regular season FAA title, grinding out a 4-3 road win over Hopkins on Thursday. As the Bruins (7-2, 5-0) sit atop of the FAA standings, coach Ryan Abraham’s squad wraps up the FAA slate with one final league contest against RCDS at home on May 8. In advance of that showdown, Brunswick has a pair of non-league contests.

In Thursday’s match, after a setback at #2 singles, Brunswick dropped the #4 singles match in a tense super-tiebreaker.

Trailing 2-0, the Bruins evened the score at two apiece with wins at #1 doubles (Tyler Carney/Aiden Reilly) and #3 doubles (Nick Saah/Christian van den Born), both in three-set super-tiebreakers.

Evan Lee gave Brunswick a 3-2 overall lead with a straight-set win (6-4, 6-4) at #3 singles.

Hopkins tied the match at 3-3 with a win at #1 singles despite a furious comeback by Brunswick’s Willie Turchetta. After dropping the opening set (6-0), Turchetta bounced back to take the second set (7-5), forcing the fourth super-tiebreaker of the day. In the extra-session, Turchetta fell 10-8.

The deciding match fell to the tandem of Hayden Hoover and Clark Davis at #2 doubles. After taking the first set (6-3), the duo jumped out to a commanding 4-0 lead in the second set. The Hopkins team countered to win the next four games to tie the contest at four. Hoover and Clark responded to take the final two games to win the set and match, as the Bruins secured the hard-fought team win over Hopkins, 4-3.
