Sailors Take Fourth at State Championship
Brunswick placed fourth out of 17 teams at the Connecticut State Championships on Saturday, hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London. Racing FJ style boats, Brunswick ‘A’ and ‘B’ selections finished with 46 and 28 points, respectively, for a total of 74 points, as Hotchkiss finished with a near-perfect score of 14 points to win the title.
Will George competed in the ‘A’ division as skipper with Bay Hodge as crew. The duo took a trio of top-five finishes in the six races. Several well-managed starts allowed the Bruins to reach the first mark in the top three, but due to erratic winds and a large fleet in pursuit, the Brunswick entry found itself covered by multiple boats in the downwind leg.
With four entries within four points of fifth-place heading into the final race, a foul called on Brunswick at the start hampered the Bruins’ chance for a top-five result, as Brunswick took seventh place overall (46 points) in the ‘A’ division.

In the ‘B’ division, senior captain Peter Pillari skippered each race, with Ryan Heinzerling as crew. With consistent results racing in unfamiliar FJ crafts, the tandem picked up four top-five finishes. Pillari and Heinzerling put on quite the show for the Brunswick fans in attendance.
In an exciting opening race, Pillari and Heinzerling were dueling with Greenwich High School for the lead on the final leg, as a speeding Hotchkiss boat passed the leaders in the closing moments. The Greenwich High School boat capsized just before the finish to give Brunswick a clear path to second place.
In the penultimate race of the day, the duo started strong, holding the top spot for the first half of the race, but a challenging wind shift at the windward mark led to an eventual fifth-place finish. For the day, the Bruins ‘B’ entry scored remarkably well, earning a third-place result with 28 points.
