Baseball Wins FAA Showdown

In a battle of one-loss teams in FAA play, Brunswick bested RCDS on Friday, 2-1. The FAA-leading Bruins entered with a 6-1 conference record, as the Wildcats owned a 5-1 FAA mark. The one-run Brunswick victory keeps the Bruins (10-2, 7-1) atop the FAA leaderboard.

Brunswick returns to action on Saturday, April 29, with a non-league road game at Salesian High School at 1:00 p.m.

The Bruins stuck first in the home half of the opening inning, as Aaron Sabato launched an 0-2 pitch over the centerfield fence with two outs. The solo homer was Sabato’s fourth of the season and ninth of his career at Brunswick.

Brunswick made it a 2-0 game an inning later, scratching a run across following a leadoff single by Patrick Ryan. After a pop-out, Ryan stole second and reached third base on a passed ball. An RBI ground-out to shortstop by Charlie Sealy allowed Ryan to score.

The Wildcats cut the Brunswick lead to 2-1 in the top of the third. RCDS pitcher Owen Coady helped his own cause by opening the inning with a leadoff single. Coady later advanced to second before being driven home on a two-out single to left field.

Both pitchers, Brunswick’s Trystan Sarcone and Coady from RCDS, allowed a pair of baserunners in the fourth inning with two outs, but each hurler got out of the jam.

Following respective 1-2-3 efforts in both halves of the fifth inning, each pitcher allowed one batter to reach base in the sixth inning. RCDS did have a runner reach second base with one out against Sarcone. However, neither offense got the ball out of the infield, as the Bruins held on to their 2-1 lead.

In the seventh and final inning, the Wildcats opened the frame with a walk and an error against Sarcone, giving the visitors runners on first and second base with no outs.

With the tying run on second base, the Bruins’ defense stiffened. Brunswick used a pick-off play at second base, as catcher Ethan Hynes threw to Sabato at shortstop to get the lead runner out. Following the put-out, Sarcone sat down the final two Wildcats with strikeouts to end the threat and the game.

Brunswick had three hits on the day, including Sabato’s homer, along with singles by Hynes and Ryan.

Sarcone (4-0) struck out 11 Wildcats over seven innings for the complete game victory. The lefty scattered four hits, all singles, while walking three batters. The lone earned run was the first one allowed this season by Sarcone, as his ERA stands at a miniscule 0.226.
