Bruins Win Battle of Lacrosse Top 20 Teams

Brunswick, ranked 14^th in the latest Inside Lacrosse-Under Armour national poll, defeated #18 New Canaan High School on the road on Saturday, 7-5. The Bruins (5-1) rallied from a 3-1 halftime deficit to secure the win. Brunswick returns to action on Wednesday, April 19, hosting Lawrenceville at 4:00 p.m.

Following an opening tally by Brunswick’s Alex Buckanavage at 9:11 of the first quarter, New Canaan closed out the first half with a three-goal run to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.

The Bruins made it a 3-2 game just 10 seconds into the third quarter, as Ben Shapiro won the opening face-off and scampered in for a goal-scoring shot at 11:50.

Buckanavage and Dickson had a hand in each of final five tallies for the Bruins, as the duo connected for the first of three Dickson goals, including a game-tying tally at 6:43. Buckanavage netted a solo tally a minute later in the third quarter to give the visitors a 4-3 lead at 5:43.

Trailing by a goal, New Canaan countered with a tally at 2:31 in the third quarter to knot the contest at four apiece heading into the final frame.

At the 10:55 mark of the fourth quarter, Dickson set up a Jimmy Heidt goal, giving the Bruins their third one-goal lead of the game. The Rams quickly responded, though, to tie the score at five with 6:19 left to play.

The Buckanavage-to-Dickson connection struck twice in the final minutes for Brunswick. The duo gave the Bruins a 6-5 lead just 46 seconds after the Rams tied the game, as Buckanavage fed Dickson for the go-ahead goal at 5:33. The Brunswick tandem closed out the game at 3:07, with Buckanavage finding Dickson at the crease for an insurance tally.

Patrick Burkinshaw picked up the win in net for Brunswick, making a dozen saves, while Shapiro and Max Metalios each grabbed a team-best three ground balls.
