Second Half Surge Pushes Lacrosse to Victory

Trailing 7-5 to Taft at halftime, 14th-ranked Brunswick outscored the Rhinos 9-2 in the second half en route to a 14-9 win on Cosby Field on Wednesday. The conference victory bumps the Bruins to 4-1 overall and 4-0 in New England West 1 action.

Looking ahead, the Bruins travel to #18 New Canaan for a 4:30 contest on Saturday, April 15.

After Brunswick took a 2-0 lead to open the game on goals from Alex Buckanavage and Jimmy Heidt, Taft countered with a 4-1 run to close out the opening frame. Heidt’s second tally of the game was Brunswick’s lone tally during the Taft run.

Leading 4-3 to start the second quarter, Taft added three more goals, countering a pair of markers from Christian Ronda and setting the score at 7-5 in favor of the Rhinos at halftime.

The Bruins responded in the third quarter with their own 4-1 run. Following a tally by Harrison Caponiti at 10:14, neither team scored for nearly 4:30 of action. Brunswick’s Sean Morris broke the scoring drought with a game-tying goal at 5:43. The Morris tally, set-up by Buckanavage, was the first of a team-high five goals for the senior midfielder.

In a 7-7 game, Taft regained the lead about a minute later with a goal before Brunswick’s Morris closed out the frame with a pair of goals, including the go-ahead tally with 58 seconds left to give the hosts a 9-8 lead.

Morris’ sharpshooting continued in the fourth quarter, opening the frame with goal number five at 8:23. Taft responded with a tally to keep the game a one-goal affair.

Leading 10-9, the Bruins closed out the game with a four-goal burst, as Heidt netted a pair during the game-finishing run.

The Bruins won 11/24 face-offs, as Ben Shapiro won 10/22 attempts at the face-off X. Patrick Burkinshaw (eight saves) earned the win in goal for Brunswick. Max Metalios picked up a game-high five ground balls, while Heidt, Burkinshaw, Shapiro, and Jack Montinaro each scooped up three.
