Baseball Suffers First Loss

Avon Old Farms rallied from a 3-0 deficit to top the host Bruins on Wednesday, 6-3. The non-league loss was the first for the Bruins (5-1) on the season. Brunswick returns to FAA action, travelling to Hamden Hall on Thursday, April 13.

 

Avon Old Farms scratched a run across in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 contest.

 

In the fifth inning, Avon exploded for five runs on five hits, including three doubles, to take a 6-3 lead over the Bruins.

 

Brunswick had a chance to counter in the bottom of the frame, as the Bruins drew consecutive one-out walks. Following an infield put-out that advanced the runners to second and third with two away, Brunswick could not muster the key run-scoring hit to tighten the game.

 

The Avon pitchers kept the Bruins at bay over the final two innings to preserve the 6-3 road win.

 

Sabato paced the Bruins with his two-run homer, while Hanrahan’s RBI double was the only other extra-base hit for the Bruins on the day.

 

Starting pitcher Michael Beninati pitched 4.0 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits, while striking out one batter. Reliever J.D. Sparks (0-1) tossed the final 3.0 innings for the Bruins. Sparks struck out a pair while allowing four earned runs.
