Baseball Tops Poly Prep in Nine Inning Classic

Following an impressive pitching duel that extended into extra innings, Brunswick’s Ryan Hanrahan plated Aaron Sabato in the bottom of the ninth to give the Bruins a 1-0 victory over visiting Brooklyn Poly Prep. The season-opening win for the Bruins (1-0) pulls Brunswick to 2-3 all-time against the perennial power from Brooklyn (3-3).

In breezy conditions and under a clear blue sky, Brunswick junior lefthander Trystan Sarcone and Poly Prep’s senior Nick Storz put on a dazzling pitching display in front of more than a dozen MLB scouts on Wednesday. The duo each tossed seven scoreless innings, as Sarcone struck out seven batters while allowing three hits. The hard-throwing Storz, who is slated to play baseball at LSU next year, mowed down 14 Bruins, while surrendering just two base hits.

Over the first seven innings, Poly Prep pushed runners into scoring position three times, including instances with runners on third base in both the first and seventh frames.

Brunswick’s best two chances to score off Storz followed lead-off hits by Ethan Hynes in the third inning and Hanrahan in the seventh. Both players got to second base following sacrifice bunts, but each was left stranded.

Without either team scoring over the regulation seven innings, each team used relievers in the extra frames.

In the eighth inning, Charlie Sealy relieved Sarcone, while lefty hurler Oliver McCarthy subbed in for Storz.

Following a scoreless eighth inning, Poly Prep got the leadoff runner on base in the top of the ninth, as Sealy hit a batter on the first pitch of the inning. Poly Prep used a sacrifice bunt to push the runner to second. However, with one out and a runner in scoring position, Sealy retired the next two Poly Prep batters to get out of the jam.

In the decisive bottom of the ninth, Aaron Sabato reached first base on a one-out infield error, bringing Hanrahan to the plate. On a 2-2 pitch, Hanrahan laced a single to left field, scoring Sabato, breaking the scoreless tie, and ending the game.

Sealy (1-0) picked up the win, tossing two innings and allowing one hit. Sarcone went seven innings without a decision, scattering three hits and a walk, while whiffing seven batters. Hanrahan finished 2-4 from the dish, slapping a pair of singles and an RBI, while Hynes picked up his first varsity hit.

Brunswick heads to Choate on Saturday, April 1, for another non-conference game.
