Brunswick’s hockey season came to an end on Saturday, as Avon Old Farms ousted the Bruins from the NEPSIHA Large School Tournament inside a jam-packed Hartong Rink, 7-2. The loss finishes the season for the Bruins (17-10-5), while Avon Old Farms (16-6-5) heads to the tourney finals to play Albany Academy at St. Anselm College on Sunday.
Following a 1-1 opening frame, including an unassisted Brunswick goal by Charles Shaffer (7th), Avon Old Farms netted a trio of second period goals to take a 4-1 lead.
The Winged Beavers scored a pair of power-play tallies during their decisive three-goal second period run.
In the opening minute of the third period, the Bruins used a power-play to make it a 4-2 contest. Nick VanBelle finished a 5-on-3 opportunity, scoring his team-leading 25th goal of the season.
However, the Winged Beavers closed out the playoff contest with another three-goal run, skating to a 7-2 victory. Avon Old Farms’ John Madden capped of an impressive hat-trick performance with the opening marker for the Winged Beavers during their final three-goal burst.
Today was the final Brunswick hockey contest for five seniors: Nick VanBelle, Grey Owens, Kineo Gorman, Tommy Napolitano and Strauss Mann.
