Ski Team Takes Silver at State Championships

Brunswick finished second in the 2017 CISL State Open at Mt. Southington on Thursday, March 2. The Bruins, in their second season as a team, were runners-up to defending champion Fairfield Prep in the 27 team event. Nick Blum took first place at the championship, completing the season sweep of Mt. Southington races, winning each time at every race this year.

In 2016, Brunswick’s inaugural season, the Bruins finished sixth.

The top-six scoring Bruins at this year’s championship, led by Blum’s winning finish, earned a collective time of 314.62, while Fairfield Prep took the team title with an aggregate time of 311.04. The race was cut short to just one run, as race conditions deteriorated to unsafe conditions. For the total team times, each racer’s opening run was doubled to produce a combined two-race score.

For his excellent season-long results, Blum earned all-state accolades for the second consecutive year. According to CISL officials, Blum is the first-ever skier to win every regular-season race along with the State Open.

Following a seventh-place finish at the Open, Ethan Hynes picked up his first all-state award, capping a strong season with the Bruins.

Ian Murray raced to a seventh-place tie with Hynes, while Tucker Calcano finished 11th. Rounding out the top six Bruins were Matt Gasparro in 47th and Tom Esposito in 56th.
