Hockey Beats Sixth-Ranked Salisbury, Coach VanBelle Wins 200th

Brunswick head coach Ron VanBelle picked up his 200th win, as visiting Brunswick topped sixth-ranked Salisbury on Monday, 4-2. It was the second time in less than a week the Bruins knocked off a top-10 program, as Brunswick beat seventh-ranked Loomis Chaffee, 4-1, on Friday, January 27.

The victory, the first by the Bruins against Salisbury in seven attempts, gives VanBelle a 200-112-14 career mark at Brunswick, dating back to the 2005-06 season.

Other personal bests were reached in the milestone contest, as Brunswick goalie Strauss Mann made a career-best 53 saves for the Bruins.

In the first period, Brunswick (11-6-3) fell behind 1-0 on a power-play goal by Salisbury at 14:22.

The Bruins countered in the second period, potting a trio of goals including a game-tying power-play goal at 2:04 by Jack Forrest. The goal was Forrest’s fourth of the season.

The Bruins took a 2-1 lead on Henry Hill’s second career goal at 9:31. Teammate Patrick Burkinshaw made it a 3-1 Brunswick lead on a power-play tally six minutes later.

Mann and company endured a 5-on-3 Salisbury power-play between the go-ahead goals in the second period, as Brunswick entered the third period with a 3-1 advantage.

Salisbury netted a goal in the third period, cutting the Brunswick lead to 3-2 with 5:28 left to play. Later, Brunswick fought off another Crimson Knight power-play, preserving its one-goal lead in the waning minutes.

Trailing in the closing minute of action, Salisbury pulled its goalie for an extra skater. The Bruins’ Edward Glassmeyer scored on the open net with 20 seconds left to ice the historic win.

Brunswick returns to action on Friday, February 3, hosting another top 10 program, as eighth-ranked Albany Academy visits Hartong Rink.
