Trailing 4-1 against Rivers in the third period, Brunswick scored a pair of goals in the closing minutes but could not muster the equalizer, falling to the Red Wings on Thursday, 5-3.
The Bruins (5-3-1) face a quick turnaround, playing again on Thursday against Upper Canada College at the Nichols-Belmont Hill Tournament in Buffalo at 8:00 p.m.
After a scoreless first period, Rivers (7-1-2), ranked second in the latest New England Prep Poll, scored two goals to open the second stanza.
The Bruins countered at the 9:03 mark of the second period when Charles Shaffer netted his third goal of the season.
With Rivers holding a 2-1 lead to start the third period, the Red Wings scored two more goals, including a shorthanded tally, to build a 4-1 lead with just over five minutes left in regulation.
Brunswick’s two-goal rally followed, as Nick VanBelle lit the lamp on a 4-on-3 power play with 2:37 left to play off assists from Christian LeSueur and Ryan Carmichael.
Roughly a minute later, the Bruins pulled their goalie, Strauss Mann (27 saves), for an extra skater and closed to within one. On the scoring play, LeSueur netted his fourth goal of the season from VanBelle and Carmichael.
Brunswick again added an extra skater on the final shift, keeping the pressure on the Red Wings goalie with some solid shots on goal. In the closing seconds, however, Rivers scored an empty netter for a 5-3 win.
