In a USA Lacrosse Magazine Top 25 matchup, Darien (No. 11) took home a 12-11 win over Brunswick (No. 1) on Thursday night in Darien.
The game started off slow with the first quarter ending in Brunswick’s favor, 2-1.
In the second quarter, the Darien offense exploded for seven goals to Brunswick's one. Many of the Blue Wave goals came in transition, pushing the ball up the field and burying shots quickly.
In the third quarter, the Bruins’ offense came alive and scored four unanswered goals to pull within one. Darien broke its scoring drought to tally one goal for the quarter, and the Bruins finished the third with two goals to pull even.
The fourth quarter came down to the last few minutes. With the game tied at 11, Payton Anderson buried what looked like the go-ahead goal with a minute remaining, but the goal was eventually waived off.
After some back-and-forth play in the middle of the field, with both teams turning the ball over, Darien secured possession with 12 seconds left and ultimately scored a last-second goal to win it.
Brunswick will look to rebound on Saturday at Loomis.
