The shot count heavily favored Brunswick — 43-22 — but the Bruins were still forced to eke out a 4-3 win over Lawrenceville Wednesday in New Jersey.
Brunswick breathed a bit of a sigh of relief on the bench after junior Ryan Wachtel’s empty netter with one minute to go, but the Big Red answered with 16.8 seconds to play to make things interesting until the final buzzer.
Junior d-man Cooper Cleaves earned player of the game honors with two goals — his first to tie the game in the first after following his own rebound off the back boards and the second on a power-play one-time slapper from the top of the 1-3-1 to give ’Wick a 3-1 lead in the third.
Senior Daniel Hu, who continues to find the scoresheet for the Bruins, scored the other goal in the second period. The tally would have counted in the 4 v 4 game we’ve been playing in practice the last two weeks, as Hu followed the rules and found himself in the area just above the blue paint before chipping home a rebound.
