After a special tribute to honor and remember Teddy Balkind -- with a plaque cast in bronze installed on the balcony of Hartong Rink -- Loomis earned a hard-fought road win against Brunswick, 3-2, on Thursday evening on Edwards Campus.
The Bruins gave their opponents way too much in the opening two periods -- and if it were not for senior co-captain Brendan Holahan's stalwart play between the pipes -- the score may have been five or six nothing after 36 minutes.
Instead, it was only 2-0 Pelicans -- and 'Wick came out for the third and played a much better brand of hockey and made a tilt of it, sandwiching goals by juniors Brendan Giles and Luke Drury around another Loomis tally to make things interesting down the stretch. Junior Sean Gibbons was in on both lamp-lighters.
Two power plays came up empty as the clock wound down -- as did a 6 on 5 faceoff win in the offensive zone in the final minute that didn't lead to anything -- and Loomis held on for the victory.
To sum it up, the Bruins got what they deserved tonight on the scoreboard and will learn a valuable lesson going forward: you need to play 54 minutes to win in this league.
