Soccer Opens Homecoming with Win

Brunswick picked up its first win of the season on Friday evening, besting Frederick Gunn, 1-0, in front of a packed Homecoming crowd under the lights of Cosby Field.

The first half ended scoreless, despite a few scoring chances by both squads.

The lone goal of the match came in the 48th minute, as senior Malik Samms won a ball near midfield and connected for a give-and-go with junior Johnny Saunders, sending Samms on a breakaway that he deposited past the Gunn GK to the low-right side of the goal.

Junior goalkeeper Phillip Stabinsky earned his first varsity shutout — while he wasn't called on to make an actual save in the match, he was extremely active in tracking down dangerous crosses and through-balls over the top, especially in the second half when Gunn was trying desperately to even the score.

’Wick’s clean sheet is also the result of solid play at the centerback position by the senior-freshman duo of Douglas Otton and Charlie Perkins, both of whom turned in 90 minutes of top-notch play in the back.

Additionally, juniors Tyler Quake and Rowan Glanville had quality showings in the midfield, along with impactful minutes from freshmen Lincoln O'Donohue and Matias DeBono on the wings.

The Bruins are back at it Thursday at GFA.
