At the NESSA Singlehanded Sailing Championships, hosted by Hyannis Yacht Club, Brunswick sailor Ben Sheppard ’23 achieved overall victory in shifty and gusty conditions.
Sheppard received the Healy Trophy and the title of New England Singlehanded Champion for winning the regatta.
Racing in the ILCA 7 class, Sheppard won nine of the 12 races over the two-day event. The Brunswick senior finished with 17 points, ahead of the second-place sailor from Tabor Academy (26 points) and third-place sailor from Martha’s Vineyard RHS (43 points). Scoring is based on finishing position, with the better a boat finishes in each race, the lower the score for the competitor.
Sheppard will represent NESSA at the singlehanded national championship on October 29-30 at Old Dominion University in Virginia. The winner of that competition will also receive the Cressy Trophy.
