Bruins Top Suffield, McGillicuddy Gets First 'W'

Brunswick's football squad picked up its first victory of the 2022 season — and the first for new Head Coach Wayne McGillicuddy — on Saturday afternoon, cruising past Suffield Academy, 28-7, in New England Prep Football Conference action from Holmes Field on the campus of Suffield Academy.

The Bruins (1-1) dominated from the start. The offense took the field first and put together an 11-play, 83-yard drive that was capped off with a 31-yard touchdown strike from Elijah Cromartie ’24 to Tomas Delgado ’23. Oliver Reynolds ’25 added the extra point.

Brunswick’s defense came out firing on all cylinders, forcing a three-and-out to set the tone for the rest of the game. On first down, Taylor Primack ’23 recorded a huge sack to put Suffield in a second and long situation.

After two drives stalling out in the first quarter, Brunswick’s offense got back on track with an impressive 10-play, 80-yard drive that was capped off by Bryce Davis’ ’24 two-yard touchdown run. Point-after attempt was good by Reynolds.

Suffield got the board with 1:26 to go in the half on a kickoff return for a touchdown to make it 14-7 at the break.

The Bruins continued to hold the Tigers at bay and forced another three-and-out to start the third quarter. Brunswick’s offense received great field position and put together a five-play, 36-yard drive that was punctuated by another Davis rushing touchdown. Reynolds added the extra point.

Later in the third quarter, Brunswick closed out the scoring with a 13-play, 62-yard drive that ended with another rushing touchdown by Davis.

The offensive line and tight ends — led by Miles Walker ’23, Will Janis ’23, Jadon LaFontant ’24, Matty Augustine ’24, Pat O’Connor ’24, Nick Burns ’23, and Riley Gilsenan ’23 — paved the way for a stellar running performance. Davis led the team with 161 yards on 30 carries, scoring three times.

Cromartie had another strong performance, as he finished 16-of-26 for 154 yards and one touchdown.

The defense was led by captain linebacker Jesse Schutzman, who posted 10 tackles. Luke Michalik added numerous tackles and a huge interception to end one of Suffield’s drives. EJ Perez, Jurgis Schmedlen, and Primack all recorded sacks for the defense. Ethan Long and Jackson Wolfram also performed extremely well for the Bruins.

’Wick is back on Edwards Campus next weekend on Saturday evening at Homecoming, scheduled to battle Salisbury School (1-1) at 5:00 p.m. on Cosby Field.
