The Varsity Soccer team earned its first point of the fall WNEPSSA season with a 1-1 draw against visiting Deerfield on Saturday afternoon.
It was a tale of two halves, with the hosts dominating the first 45 minutes and the visitors getting the best of the Bruins in the second frame.
’Wick scored its first goal of the season in the 17th minute: sophomore forward Tom Rockman collected a clearance near midfield and quickly played a through-ball to senior Malik Samms towards the left sideline. Samms beat two Deerfield defenders and deposited the ball into the back of the net — low-right past the Big Green goalkeeper.
While that score line stayed at the halftime break, the Bruins had a number of other scoring chances with Samms having a few other opportunities, in addition to sophomore midfielders Lincoln O’Donohue and Matias DeBono.
Deerfield carried a different energy in the second half, coming out and immediately putting pressure on the Brown and White back-four. Just three minutes into the frame, the Big Green earned and converted a PK past junior goalkeeper Phillip Stabinsky.
DA would have a number of chances to take the lead after this, but thanks to a few impressive saves from Stabinsky (who made eight saves on the day) and some help from the goalposts, the Bruins ultimately kept them out of the goal.
The closing two minutes were exciting, with ’Wick earning a free kick just outside the box and then a corner kick shortly after, but ultimately falling short of converting both opportunities.
The Bruins (0-3-1) host Masters on Tuesday, travel to Avon on Wednesday, and take on Frederick Gunn at Homecoming on Friday evening.
