Brunswick took the top two steps of the podium in the NEPSAC Giant Slalom race at Waterville Valley Ski Resort on Wednesday, February 16.
Senior William Kallman won the Giant Slalom individual title with the two fastest runs of the day, and teammate and freshman Patch Leonard earned the silver medal, only 1.90 seconds behind. Following close behind was freshman Olllie Leonard in an impressive 5th place. Junior Cameron Shipman (11th) and freshman Ryan Warner (17th) also showed their strength placing in the top 20.
With this remarkable start to race day, Brunswick was in 1st place and held a significant lead over the other 13 schools competing. The highly technical Slalom event, however, got the better of Brunswick’s racers with only Shipman completing the race. Shipman attacked the course with confidence and consistency, finishing in 6th place. Brunswick’s talent and depth on the team, by all rights, should have led the team to the top of the podium overall, but anything can happen on a Slalom course. And that day at Waterville Valley, it did. Kallman was disqualified for straddling a gate at the end of the course, and his teammates encountered challenges along the way and did not finish their runs.
The scoring format for the championship is based on the finish of the top three racers for each school in both the Giant Slalom and Slalom events. Each event finish requires a racer to complete two runs in that event. Using an aggregate scoring method, the team with the lowest combined score over the two events is crowned the champion.
Overall, Brunswick finished in 7th place out of the 14 teams, and concluded its race season.
Kallman wraps up his Brunswick ski career with the honor of being Brunswick’s first-ever and only-ever NEPSAC individual champion in the seven-year history of the ski program. Kallman also earned golds in both Giant Slalom and Slalom in 2020.
Coach Brian Shipman led the team for the first time this season, with great success throughout it. With Coach Shipman at the helm, the young and talented team promises much success ahead.
