Bruins Fall to Storm in FAA Finals

Brunswick fell to St Luke’s in Saturday’s FAA Championship game, 47-39, in front of a capacity crowd at Dann Gym.

The Bruins came out of the gates fast, scoring on their first six possessions, and stifling the Storm with defensive pressure. A Jon Sigurdsson up and under layup started the action for the Bruins and was followed by a coast-to-coast score from Malik Samms. Threes from Matty Augustine and Tristan Joseph, along with a Sigurdsson layup and a Joseph transition bucket off of a beautiful pass by Samms, gave Brunswick a 14-2 advantage with 12:30 remaining in the first half.

Just as it seemed the Bruins couldn’t miss, for the rest of the half it felt as though they couldn’t buy a make, suddenly going cold as St Luke’s went on a run of its own. Despite the back-and-forth momentum, very little advantage was gained on the scoreboard as Brunswick trailed by a score of 23-21 heading into the break.

The opening minutes of the second half were back and forth until an Augustine three pointer and a Joseph reverse layup gave the Bruins a 34-30 advantage and forced St Luke’s into a timeout. It was at that point that the Storm took control, hitting timely shots and free throws as Brunswick couldn’t seem to find the bottom of the net and closing the game on 17-5 run.

Sigurdsson led Brunswick in scoring with 15, while Joseph and Samms chipped in nine and Augustine had six.

It was the final game in a Brunswick basketball uniform for Charlie Johnson and captains Tristan Joseph and Henry Caponiti. The impact all three made on the program is undeniable and they will be missed.

A season full of adversity, injuries, and schedule changes brought highs and lows and certainly did not finish the way Brunswick had hoped, but a trip to the league finals and the raucous crowd at the game certainly shows an arrow pointed upwards as the team looks to next season.
