Bruins Gut Out Road Win at Gunn

Brunswick gutted out a 4-3 win on the road at Gunn this evening, killing off four third-period penalties — including an extended five on three — before junior defenseman Niko Cadoret scored the game winner with five minutes to play in what was a great, playoff-like hockey game here in Washington, Conn.

Gunn had a two-zip lead before the Bruins could blink after netting a pair in the tilt’s first four minutes, but the visitors hunkered down and clawed back into it with a power-play tally by sophomore Brendan Giles with 10 seconds to go in the frame.

In the second, ’Wick popped two more on the man advantage, as senior John Burdett and sophomore Sean Gibbons put their team ahead for four minutes and 53 seconds. The pesky and talented Highlanders didn’t go away and tied it before the second intermission to set the stage for the frenetic finish.

The Bruins were ushered to the box four times in succession in the final period, putting the pressure on the Brown and White PK unit. Shots were blocked, clears were made, and saves were aplenty by junior goaltender Brendan Holahan. The kill was perfect on the night.

When things finally returned to even strength, Cadoret joined the rush, took a sophomore Luke Drury feed, and sniped one up under the bar to send the bench into an uproar.

More character and guts were on display in the final minutes before the buzzer sounded — what a road win against one of the hottest teams in prep hockey.

T-P is next on Friday at 5 at Hartong. On the road to Deerfield Saturday.
