Brunswick Alpine Finishes Regular Season Strong

Brunswick Alpine finished this year’s regular-season racing circuit strong, sharing the spotlight with freshman Patch Leonard, who lit up the hill at every race last week.

Leonard qualified individually for Team Connecticut on Monday, February 7, competing against a strong field in the Slalom Shoot-Out, and in sloppy, wet conditions. He placed fourth in the slalom race and ninth overall, combined with his giant slalom race from the prior week. Leonard will be representing Team Connecticut at the Eastern High School Championships 2022 to be held March 3-6 at Attitash Mountain, N.H.

The following night on Tuesday, February 8, Brunswick Alpine posted a very close third-place team finish, only .81 seconds behind second-place Daniel Hand High School. Leonard continued his solid skiing and placed second overall, his best finish for the season. His second run was the fastest of the night, sharing that distinction with one other Daniel Hand racer. The entire team closed out the regular season with consistently solid runs.

And, on Thursday, February 10, the team competed at the State Championships and placed fourth overall, competing in a field that included both the Large and Small School Divisions. Leonard once again hit the accelerator and finished in third place, and, for the first time this season, Nick Weiss scored important points for the team, peaking at just the right time. At the post-race awards ceremony, Brunswick was also awarded second place for its standing in the regular season races in the Small School (Class S) division.

With one last race on the calendar, a select crew from ’Wick Alpine will represent Brunswick at the NEPSAC championships on February 16 at Waterville Valley, N.H. Co-captains William Kallman and Cameron Shipman will lead the team in a full day of slalom and giant slalom races. Patch Leonard, Ollie Leonard, Evan Daigle, and Ryan Warner each earned a spot on the NEPSAC squad.
