'Wick Squash Goes Toe-to-Toe with Top-Ranked Kent

The varsity squash team lost a valiant fight on Tuesday evening at home against top-ranked Kent, going down 4-3 in a virtual "clash of the titans."

The stage was set, the "swamp" was fully present, and this was going to be one of the toughest home matches Brunswick has hosted in over seven years.

Kent arrived with a very strong lineup comprised of top junior players from Ecuador, Mexico, Canada, and U.S.A — and the Lions were intent on proving why they are the No.1-ranked school in the country.

Despite facing these squash giants, the Bruins were also hungry to defend their home court win streak and were eager for the challenge ahead of them.

With the evens going on first, Will Newman made quick work of his opponent at the #6 spot and gave the Bruins the first point on the board. #2 David Beeson executed a great game plan and played very solid squash to pull out a tight 3-0 win, while Warren Klein fought hard against a tough opponent at #4 before losing 3-0.

#7 Johan Hodgson was too strong for his opponent, getting another point on the board for Brunswick.

Although the Bruins were now up 3-1, the remaining matches were going to be the toughest battles.

Freshman Oliver Velasco was playing against the #9 ranked player in the U.S. Boys U19 at the #5 spot. Velasco lost the first game 5-11, but came out firing in the second game to take a 5-0 lead. However, his older, stronger opponent was able to find another gear and slowly fight back to eventually take the second game 11-8. After an immense effort by the freshman, Kent would take the #5 match 3-0.

The #1 and #3 players were in the midst of intense battles of their own. Patrick Keller had just evened his match at 1-1 and Tad Carney had lost two close first games. The players were fighting tooth and nail for every point. Keller would eventually fall short and lose 3-1. The match score was tied 3-3.

Carney was playing some amazing squash and suddenly had his opponent on the ropes as he volleyed everything and won the third game 11-6. The crowd erupted as Carney pulled one back.

The fourth game was a game of attrition with each player trying to wear the other down. The points were nip and tuck until late in the game when a couple grueling points went in favor of Kent. A few more tough rallies later, and the Kent #1 would seal the victory.

An amazingly hard-fought contest by both teams and an excellent caliber of squash all around.
