Brunswick Soccer Players Earn Post-Season Honors

After its most successful season in years with an 11–6 record, a number of Brunswick players earned post-season honors.

The James Brown Award was presented to senior captain John Dunn, naming him as the team’s MVP.  A four-year varsity player, Dunn anchored the defense as a dominant centerback. He also scored three goals on set pieces during the season and assisted on the game-winning goal against Hopkins in the team’s 1–0 Homecoming victory.

Nico Montoni was named to the Class A All-NEPSAC first team and the WNEPSSA Select Team.  Montoni, a senior captain, is a four-year varsity player who has developed into a versatile attacking force during his career. Montoni was the leading goal scorer in his class at Brunswick, contributing seven goals and five assists this season alone. Highlights included the game-winning PK against Frederick Gunn and assisting on the game-winning goal against Choate. Montoni had two goals and two assists this year in the 5–1 victory over Salisbury.

Frankie Grether was named Honorable Mention on the Class A All-NEPSAC team and invited to play in the 2021 WNEPSSA College Showcase at the end of the season. Grether is a two-year varsity player after arriving at Brunswick at the start of his junior year. He filled the important role of defensive center midfielder on the Brunswick squad and rarely came off the field. Grether scored four goals (including important finishes against Deerfield and Hopkins) and assisted on two others.

Malik Samms earned Honorable Mention status on the 2021 WNEPSSA team and was invited to play in the 2021 WNEPSSA College Showcase at the end of the season. Samms, a junior and three-year varsity player, is a captain-elect for next year’s team. Samms is a highly versatile athlete: his natural position is attacking midfielder, but he has played at the striker, centerback, and even goalkeeper positions. Samms was a co-leader in scoring this year with eight goals and six assists, including a two goal and two assist effort in the team’s 6–0 victory this season over Millbrook.
