Bruins Raise Sticks for Teddy, Defeat Millbrook at Hartong

After an emotional moment of silence to honor Teddy Balkind, Brunswick and Millbrook dropped the puck and played a good old-fashioned game of hockey this afternoon at Hartong Rink — with the Bruins emerging victorious by a score of 5-3.

It was Brunswick’s first home contest in front of spectators in nearly two years, the last coming on March 7, 2020, when the Bruins hosted the Large School Tournament semifinals.

’Wick channeled its emotions and came out flying in the opening period — and scored on back-to-back shifts four minutes into the frame on goals by junior James Shannon (a breakaway) and sophomore Casey Quinson (a deflection).

Sophomore Brendan Giles added another after breaking in alone and sent the Brown and White to the locker room with a three-goal lead.

The Cleaves brothers hooked up for the fourth Brunswick tally late in the second period, with the older Hank tipping in a point shot from the younger Cooper. 4-0 Bruins after two.

Perhaps the prettiest goal of the game came early in the third on a give-and-go 2 v 1 between Shannon and Giles (the recipient) for an easy one.

Give the Mustangs credit — they kept digging and got to within two with just under a minute remaining in the game.

But junior goaltender Brendan Holahan shut the door from there to secure the win.

Up next is a home-and-home series with Hill this Friday and Saturday. Game one is Friday in Pottstown, Pa., at 6 p.m.
