Bruins Rally to Top Winged Beavers

On a chilly Saturday night in Avon, the Bruins came from behind in the fourth quarter to win a competitive game against a talented Winged Beaver squad by a score of 35-28.

Brunswick used four different running backs throughout the game, but Kha’lil Eason proved to be a difference-maker as the senior registered four touchdowns, including the game-winner with nine seconds left to play.

After trading fumbles on the opening drives, Avon marched down the field and took a 7-0 first quarter lead on a short pass on the right sideline off of a scramble drill.

In the second quarter Brunswick evened the score at 7-7 behind the strength of a 12-yard run by Eason. Junior Will Erdmann converted on the point after (as he did all evening).

The teams held each other scoreless through the balance of the first half, with both teams getting to the QB and registering tackles for lost yardage.

The game truly became a tale of two halves as what appeared to be destined for a defensive battle turned into an electric offensive game. Avon struck first (and second) to take a 21-7 lead after a short field and a busted coverage.

Trailing in the early fourth quarter by two scores, Brunswick mounted a drive and the message to the team was simple: Score here, get a stop, and be right back in the game. Jason Agudelo snared a 23-yard pass for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 21-14.

’Wick recovered a fumble, then hit Eason on back-to-back bubble screens to even the score at 21.

On the ensuing Avon possession, junior Jesse Schutzman blocked a punt to give the Bruins good field position.
They capitalized on the field position by running the ball down the field with Eason and Hunter Clark. Eason ran one in from five yards out to take what would be a short-lived lead.

After an exciting, diving 50-yard touchdown reception, Avon was flagged for a celebration penalty. Choosing to assess the penalty on the kickoff, Brunswick gained some necessary yards of field position to mount its last drive of the evening, culminating with a four-yard touchdown reception by Eason with nine seconds remaining in the game.

Brunswick will be back at home on Friday night to face Trinity Pawling.
