Varsity Soccer Tops GCDS, Win Streak Reaches Five

’Wick soccer extended its winning streak to five games with a 6-1 victory over GCDS on Friday afternoon.  

The team's record now stands at 11-4.  The Bruins dominated the statistics of this game in shots on goal, corners, and possession.

Scoring commenced in the 13th minute when Will Donovan back-flicked a cross from Malik Samms into the right corner. Samms added to the lead (34th minute) when he intercepted a pass in midfield and drove for the goal, burying a shot into the back of the net unassisted.  

GCDS was able to bring one back a few minutes later on its only chance in the first half from a free kick just outside the box. Brunswick responded in the 39th minute when captain Nico Montoni converted a corner kick from Alex DeLuca. The first half ended at 3-1.

The second half started with a renewed purpose to pressure GCDS into turnovers and create scoring chances. In a five-minute span, Brunswick scored three goals and put the game away.  Kaden Saad's throw was controlled by Samms, who found Donovan in the box. Donovan spun left and volleyed with his left foot for a beautiful goal (55th minute). 

Frankie Grether intercepted a pass in midfield and passed to Samms, who drove the ball into the net from the right side (58th minute). The scoring was completed when captain John Dunn struck a shot toward the frame of the goal from 40 yards out — the ball swerved and dipped in the air and finished up in the back of the net (59th minute). 

With their regular goalkeeper out, Jeffrey Ruiz stepped in and had a great game between the sticks — making several saves and distributing the ball nicely. All of the team's healthy players got into the game for significant minutes and played well. Among the non-starters, Kevin Miller, CJ Hyde, DeLuca, and Ollie Leonard made important contributions while on the pitch.

The team plays a non-league contest against Hoosac School on Senior Day at Carroll Field on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
