Varsity Soccer Blanks King on Cosby Field

The Brunswick soccer team played a strong game against a good King squad to improve its record to 7-4 on the season, defeating the Vikings by a score of 3-0 under the lights on Cosby Field.

The first half ended scoreless with solid efforts from both teams. King came to play and was a worthy opponent. Brunswick had more scoring opportunities but couldn't find the back of the net.

The Bruins pressed at the start of the second half and opened the scoring at the 51-minute mark. Gavin Foster took the ball down the right wing and passed to Jeffrey Ruiz, who quickly found Nico Montoni. The senior co-captain struck a beautiful one-time left footed shot into the net, just inside the right post.

A few minutes later, Malik Samms hit a blistering drive that the King goalkeeper pushed wide, resulting in a corner. Douglas Otton hit an excellent corner kick that John Dunn, stationed at the near post, artfully turned into the net with his head — 2-0 Bruins.

Brunswick finished the scoring in the 84th minute from another set piece. This time, Kaden Saad took the corner and found the net directly — something that happens only rarely.

Will Donovan played relentlessly up front. Frankie Grether and Will Higgs dominated the midfield. GK James Walker led the effort to complete the shutout.

The Bruins look forward to their next game, again under the lights on Homecoming Friday against Hopkins at 5 p.m.
