'Wick Tops Andover on Gridiron

Brunswick went on the road north to Boston and ultimately defeated Andover by a score of 40-0 on Saturday afternoon.

For the first time this year, the Bruins did not start the game with the ball. Fortunately, Jalen Johnson recovered a fumble on the fourth play of the game. On the second offensive play, Kha’lil Eason caught a screen pass and outran the defense to open what would be a banner scoring day for the Bruins.

The next two Brunswick scores came from the defense, as Johnson had a pick-six on the next Andover series to make it 13-0 Bruins. Not to be outdone, Charlie Johnson scored next on a pick-six as he jumped a hitch and found the end zone to make it 20-0 Brunswick. Chris Gaine closed out the scoring for the first quarter with a short run to make it 26-0 Brunswick. 

Danny Lauter punched in a one-yard run in the second quarter to make it 33-0 Brunswick. After trading field position for the majority of the remainder of the quarter, Gaine broke loose on a screen pass down the Andover sideline for 62 yards. The drive fizzled on the 10-yard line but George Villis got the ball back with just over a minute to play in the half when he intercepted an Andover pass on first down. The Bruins drove down to the one and Gaine followed his blockers for a one-yard touchdown plunge as the clock wound down. The point-after was good to close the scoring on the day. 

Both teams took the air out of the ball in the second half and extended drives by rushing for large chunks of yardage, but there was no scoring in the half. 

Miles Walker, Cliff Belknap, Michael Burton, Will Janis, and Matty Augustine deserve credit for their work on the offensive line. Some other notable performances came from junior DE Jesse Schutzman, who had two sacks, and Ashton Winegardner, who had some great catches and ran some great routes at his WR position. 

Next weekend’s homecoming game is against the perennially tough Cheshire Academy Cats, who will come into the matchup sporting a 4-1 record.
