'Wick Tops Kent on 'Coaches vs. Cancer' Day

Brunswick defeated Kent, 4-1, in front of a big crowd as part of the school’s “Coaches vs. Cancer” match in support of the American Cancer Society on Saturday afternoon on Edwards Campus. 

An exciting 11-minute span in the first half secured the win for the Bruins. Senior Patrick Keller got his first goal of the season in the 25th minute: starting with a big clearance from senior GK James Walker to junior Malik Samms near midfield, Samms found Keller on a through ball between Kent defenders, which he confidently finished to the bottom-left corner of the goal.  

Keller drew a foul in the 30th minute while on a fast break to the left of the 18-yard box. Junior Douglas Otton took the ensuing free kick and curved it perfectly around the Kent wall to find senior Frankie Grether's head for a redirection into the back of the net.  

Just one minute later, Samms won the ball off a Kent midfielder, made three cuts through the Kent defense, and buried a shot upper-right well out of the reach of the Kent GK.  

Once again in the mix, Keller ended ’Wick’s scoring for the day in the 36th minute: first year Will Higgs earned his first varsity assist in playing a perfect through ball on the ground to Keller just outside the 18, who quickly deposited it in the back of the net.

Kent put the hosts on their heels for a moment to start the second half, getting on the board in the 49th minute after finishing a shot that rebounded off the top post.

Seniors Nico Montoni and Gavin Foster had a number of near-scoring opportunities in the second frame, putting constant pressure on the Kent defensive group.

While he was only called on to make three saves for the day, Walker had another good showing between the pipes. His distribution was on-point and he was called on a number of times to clear away through-balls with his feet.

Senior Frankie Grether deserves a mention for his confident and composed efforts today, both from the center-back and center-midfield positions, in addition to senior captain John Dunn for his defensive play. Junior Christian Larkin, sophomore Alex Deluca, and first year Theo Perkins all played their most significant minutes since joining the varsity squad.

The Bruins hope to extend their winning streak to three games when they head up to Trinity-Pawling on Wednesday.
